When I think about the word fabric or tapestry, I am thinking of the cosmic threads that put the universe together. It is like the strings (as in string theory) that weave together making the cosmos we know. It also is a mystical idea. The character is a Mage playing with the fabric reality.
The spiral effects is a lot like the spiral you see in the particle accelerator. A photo of the nano world.
